Thoughts on Going Back to See My Counselor
“Sun’s out, Gun’s out,” as my son’s homeroom teacher announced to him last week when he wore a muscle tee! Oh, if only we all had the confidence of youth! With the arrival of this bright-shining orb in the sky that seems to have been missing for far too long, I have really given myself pause to consider why, despite it’s brilliance, I have still been feeling so glum.
As I pondered and spoke with friends I realized just how much had been stacking on my shoulders, especially in the last six months- constantly being drug back into court, astronomical legal fees piling up, the craziness of my kids’ off and on school schedules, the pressure to provide and keep everything afloat, the big changes our family has been going through that while wonderful can also bring their own unique stressors. More days than I care to admit have been spent having a difficult time even picking myself up out of bed.
So, I finally did what I had been considering for far too long- I made an appointment to go back in and see my old counselor. It just seemed like it would be a good time to see her and have a bit of a checkup on how I was doing mentally and emotionally. To my immense satisfaction and validation, she told me that she often sees women come back in to work through more processing who are at this same point of their journey as I am.
This was so encouraging to hear! While things may be hard right now, I am sort of right on track with where I need to be in processing my mental health, and I am not a bit ashamed to say that I am getting the help that I need. It is not shameful, or bad, or disappointing to have to go back into counseling when you’ve been out of it for a while. It means you are self-reflective enough to know when the next threshold has been crossed and you need to dive back in to doing the hard work to keep moving forward.
It also just so happens to be Mental Health Awareness Month. I want to encourage you ladies to do some soul searching and see if a counseling professional could be one of the keys to improving your journey right now and helping you break out of survival mode to live well anyway. We all need a little bit of help sometimes and the work is worth it! I’d also love to hear your experiences with counseling and pursuing your own mental health.
Until Next Time- Go Be Bold & Gracious!
